In the beginning... God created booty
Feb. 16th, 2010 09:24 amA few weeks ago,
paka and I flipped through Crumb's Illustrated book of Genesis. It was of course quite horrifying in the way that all Crumb drawings are. He stayed faithful to the book with every line and drew every nasty little detail. It is an unbearable yet awe-inspiring masterpiece of his work, making the bible both more real and more loathsome than ever before.
Predictably, some Christians are upset. They're very angry with Mr. Crumb for making their holy book so sordid and dirty. They accuse him of warping the stories to fit his sick little mind, almost as if they never read the book themselves.
Personally, I thought it was brilliant. Too horrible to look at, this is probably the version of the bible that is contained in the Ark of the Covenant, having somehow fallen backwards through time. If you look at it, it will sear your eyes and make them melt as it tells you the story of God.
Well done, Mr. Crumb, you horrible horrible man. :)

Given that the attitude Christians seem to have is that the OT is terrible, the OT is shit, anyone who follows only the OT is worthless, and their bible is so much better, I find their sudden defense of Genesis to be disingenuous. So maybe what they're actually afraid of is that he'll work his way upwards through the entire bible and eventually we'll get to see hideously ugly Jesus with big-butt-gigantic-schnoz Mary Magdalene. I guess I can sort of sympathize since the idea of Crumb tackling some of Solomon's more sensual prose conjures images of truly revolting people gettin' it on.
3. Since I can accept Genesis' grab-bag nature, I was much more horrified by the way everyone in the Crumb version is pretty repulsive. But I also know Crumb well enough to know that he thought he was drawing the hottest babes ever.
