Friday night I went to see Mongol with
centauress and
prickvixen
I really enjoyed this movie but I should mention that it's not an action film. It has the slow pacing of a chinese drama but the cinematography, acting, and effects are quite good, and it was really interesting to see Ghengis Khan presented as a sympathetic and intelligent character rather than a ruthless savage.
It's really hard for me to think of a good film to compare this with. It's somewhere between Ran and a soviet propaganda film I watched in one of my film history classes. It's the sort of film that I think
paka would really enjoy, and it was definitely one of the better films I've seen this year.

His empire tolerated a variety of religions and had a very efficient messenger system for communications. This is admittedly the same guy who had entire cities worth of people butchered, but he seems like a pretty enlightened dude when you compare him to say, William I or some of the Crusader leaders whom we're taught are history's "good guys." He's actually sort of a lesser god among Mongolian animists.
