I am deliberately misquoting Taxi Driver, yes.

So... Apparently the woods where I like to hike are being burned to the ground because some jackass decided to burn their trash instead of hauling it to the dump.

Oh, but it's okay because ya'know. Only 1.8M in damages so far and one house destroyed. No real losses compared to most fires. Just some useless forest and animals.

Want to bet the schmuck who started it gets fined a few grand and that's the end of it?

I really wish we placed similar values on all forms of life. :(

Sounds very similar to my views/rants about corporations who dump their toxic waste into water supplies because it's cheaper to pay the fines than it is to dispose of it properly. Or who leave toxic chemicals (re: Wal-mart) stacked in parking lots near water drains so when the bags of crap (literally, it's fertilizer) split open from being improperly stored, the waste flows into the water supply as well.
It's a vain wish and I know it, but it'd be nice to see the government "for the people" actually focus on things important to our well-being instead of fighting battles and using resources for their own selfish motives *cough*Shrub*cough*.

Sadly, I won't take that bet about the fine. We're all big kids now, and we know what'll happen - or more importantly, what won't.

Sucks that your favorite hiking spot is being laid waste like that. But we have great walking areas near our place *hint hint* *nudge nudge*
:)

*Raven hops back to her branch, one beady eye glaring at the careless f*ckwads, feathers fluffed*

Yes, but those places aren't utterly cut off from the Bay, really hot, and really really empty. Cel phones don't even work in those parks.

Mountain View has a great park just a few minutes' drive from us. Rancho San Antonio I think it's called - The 3 of us head up as often as we can (which I must say hasn't been lately with the move and all) so Gina can see her chickens (yes, there's a farm in the middle of the park, it's wonderful :) )
Kind of creepy to consider going to a park that's empty and cell phones don't work in though >.<

Typical CDF practice is to charge the responsible parties with *ALL* costs of suppression, which can be expressed as a lien on any real property in question. Under the Incident Command System, there is an entire section called "FINANCE" which does nothing but count up the number of hours, gallons of fuel, etc. so that agencies can cross bill each other and a total cost of suppression can be calculated.

The last time I looked, the ticker was over $500,000 for this one incident. Pricey way to get rid of one's trash.

now THAT is good to know, I was talking to Gina about that earlier today, wasn't sure how much they actually gouged the culprit/idiot with.

Thanks for the info, it's nice to know that those responsible won't totally skate on what they did.

They're looking to charge the lucky person responsible about $5million dollars so far.
