It's Spring!
Apr. 5th, 2010 04:19 pmOn Saturday, Stacey and I went and cruised a couple of nurseries to get started on our gardens. Stacey has more of a focus on ornamental plants and I'm more into edibles but we have plans which will hopefully ensure that we have a garden that is both beautiful and delicious.
Stacey is planning to work mostly with native plants for the decorative aspects of our outdoor space whereas I'm trying to figure out how to best use my garden space with its limited amounts of sunlight.
I got a few plants that are already started (mostly tomatoes and one summer squash) but am mostly starting stuff from seed. I was a little surprised by how pricey seeds have become. I think in the future I think I'll make more of an effort to keep seeds from things I eat so I can plant those. But ohwell. Lesson learned.
Not a lot of surprises in the garden this year. Several types of summer squash, peas, carrots, beets, a couple types of cucumbers, a few types of tomatoes, a few eggplants, varieties of basil, thyme, mints, parsley, and cilantro. About the most 'exotic' things are Shiso and Lakota squash. (The later Stacey chose over kobacha because she didn't like the company the kobacha seeds were from) I also want to start some greens. Collards and the like. Stacey says it's too late in the year for them but I'm not so certain. Our weather has been pretty unpredictable this year. On Sunday there was snow down to 2400 feet and at our house (A mere 700ft) it was still in the high 30s at night.
Happily though, we have a sun room so I set up a table and have all my seeds sewn in pots for now. I'll transfer them outdoors in a few weeks.
*sigh* I've _really_ missed having a proper garden.
