I probably should have mentioned this sooner but I'll be New York for a week (arriving Wednesday morning)

Never been there before. I'm not too interested in the standard tourist traps though it sounds like I'm going to get dragged to the empire state building whether I like it or not.

Anyhow, what's there to do in the city that never sleeps? Particularly for the person that never sleeps?

I figure I'll hit the Guggenheim, MoMA, and Museum of Natural History but all of those are daytime things that close fairly early. Is there anything to do in the evenings that does not involve greasy food or alcohol? A play would be nice. Stacey's sister (who we're going to visit) is at Vassar studying theatre-related stuff so that would work well but I suspect those require more planning and are likely out of my price range.

Hmm. I guess that http://theater.nytimes.com/venues/broadway.html suggests some of the shows are close to affordable if I went with the cheap seats. I'm not sure how I feel about a broadway musical of the Addams Family. Doubtlessly based on the TV show, not the comic. 'American Idiot' sounds tempting and there's something delicious and rotten in the idea of seeing a musical based inspired by a Green Day song. Looking at the show list though, I can't help but feel like Broadway is nothing but a tie-in for corporate marketing interests. Where's PEPSICO the Musical with witty songs about McDonalds and KFC?

Livejournal is sucking today.

The Bible. The Oracle! is www.newyork.timeout.com/

Get it in print and check out the online version before and during your stay. In fact, they have a pretty good app for smartphones. It lists everything to do in every category (art, film, clubs, theater, gay life all kindsa stuff) by day. It lists free things to do. It has great features on what's cool where. Go to the vintage flea markets - I think TO has info on shopping also. Their site certainly does.

Village Voice is also good. They have an excellent site (and a free print edition). I researched and printed out a list of all the thrift shops in NYC and went to them one time. It was lotsa fun. Seems the girlie goodness trickles down.

Oooh and you'll love the artist markets. Just cruise around SOHO for pop up weirdness and well stuff that's really expensive in tiny boutiques. The consignment shops of the upper east and west side are cool too. Very expensive slipped down to still expensive.

The bestest, bestest place to eat on the 24 hour tip is the 24 hour Ukrainian diner, Veselka. I make a pilgrimmage there every time I go to NYC.

Ooh and get an inexpensive non-sexual Chinese massage. Foot reflexology or full body. So great. You'll need it after poundin' your dogs into the NYC pavement - which is actually the fun part. I love just walking around and watching life there. The streets are teaming with it.

I do heart New York. I think you will too.

PS. Check out university event calendars for free/cheap stuff to do also. Cool lectures or performances. And Juilliard students. And And And!
