In the kitchen the other day, I had the most dangerous realization... A pressure cooker has a hose attachment on top of it. They just use a weight there and the pressure releases itself by being high enough to lift the weight but I could replace that weight with a hose and an in-line regulator and a release valve and then... I have a boiler for any steam engine I might desire!

Now if you can just keep it from exploding!

...speaking of which, you saw that mythbusters bit with the water heater rocketing into the sky, right? It was so beautiful! ;.;

Urgh! Good idea, but pressure cookers are only designed to hold about two atmospheres (typical steam power pressure is ten or more atmospheres). I heard once that the old steam guys would ignore the gauge and run them just at the point where the steam started escaping between the rivets. Hoo boy!

Nah. Typical household cookers go to ~15psi. You're right though. It's not a huge amount of power and more pratically, I have an air compressor for my airbrush that I could use as a source of similar (and safer) energy. It just seemed like a fun idea.
