I was out at like 8:30 this morning in a fairly unpopulated area. I parked my bike and had walked about 15 feet away from it, clear line of sight, I was still wearing my helmet and stuff.

I had crouched down because I found some oyster mushrooms and I was like "Wow cool! Actual edible mushrooms!"

In the ~10 minutes I spent collecting them, so fucking asshole stole my bike. My bike was a piece of junk. 15 years old. it wouldn't even shift into the top gears anymore. It'd just got back from Burning Man. What the fuck!?

I ran back to the corner, looked both ways, saw a guy on a bike, flagged down a car, got them to give me a ride after them, turned out to be the wrong bike. Shit shit shit. I can't afford to replace my bike right now. Why do people fucking suck so much? What kind of jackass does shit like that?

Someone just gave my roommate two new bikes. Maybe you can have one…

If you wouldn't mind asking, I'd appreciate the possibility. I commute on my bike and it sucks being without it. :(

My bike was stolen once. It's a Peugeot. It was only a year or so old at the time. I had stopped into the corner store for some fruits and vegetables and I'd left my bike leaning against the window. When I got back out, no bike. I think I saw some kids with it a week or so later but I wasn't sure. I got another bike like it, only a bit shorter (end of stock and they were out of my size). A few years later the cops called: they found my bike abandoned in the basement of a bar. They knew it was mine because I had let the cops engrave it during some kind of bike awareness blitz. I still have that bike. Rode it again today.

So: garage sales, Craig's list, Salvation Army... get a twenty-year old Peugeot. It will be better than anything under a thousand dollars that you can buy today (new bikes use aluminum crank parts, 20 years ago Peugeot was still using steel).

Agreed, mostly. Although I'd say Goodwill over Salvation Army. I won't have anything to do with Salvation Army for ethical reasons.

Craigs List and Freecycle. You'll find another bike soon enough.

My condolences... I've had the same bike for the last 25 years and would hate to lose it.

I'd suggest taking my approach next time and DELIBERATELY make your bike look like a pile of shit (but tweaked to run wonderfully). Undesirability is a GREAT deterrent!
