Earring thingy
Jun. 23rd, 2008 07:51 pmI mentioned this a couple weeks ago. A mundane little build project I did.
It's an 'earring cabinet'.

The front is a picture frame (with the glass removed, of course)
There's a tiny subframe that sits inside the picture frame. I could have made it by taking a jig-saw to the backing that came with the picture frame but elected to make my own instead. It sits where the glass and backing would have sat.
I stretched a scrap of cloth tightly over that and fastened it with a staple gun.
The subframe is then held in place with some guitar picks I had laying around but any number of methods would work.
Picture of back and of the door and the frame if you're interested.
I could have used another picture frame for the back but instead made myself a tongue-and-groove frame out of unfinished wood.
That's held to the wall by a couple of screws that go into wall anchors. The head of one screw is doubling as the catch for the magnetic latch.
I routered out a little space in the picture frame and hot-glued an old drive magnet into it. In retrospect, this is probably overkill. A normal magnet would have sufficed.
Oh. And then there are some little hinges on the far side but I'm guessing you knew that.
Anyhow. That's what I was babbling about. Not a very complex thing but the other place I had for earrings was inconvenient and they usually just get left on the medicine cabinet in the bathroom. This is thin and out of the way but still in the bathroom and it's kind of pretty so... Seemed like it was worth trying.
