I've been too busy to write the past few days so this is catch-up from a few days ago. I went out to dinner with Jeff and Dasha atta Pho place. Their menu had a lot of tripe. I realized that the thought of eating tripe made me really queasy... But I'd never eaten tripe before. I hate having baseless phobias and when I encounter them, I tend to try to do something about them. So... I ordered soup with tripe...

Now... I mistakenly assumed they'd cut it up in some way as to make it unrecognizible, not just leave shredded chunks of intestine floating in my soup. Alas, I was mistaken. It looked like tripe *quease* but I picked it up and put it in my mouth and ate it. It is tough and has a
texture like a thin slightly brittle vinyl. I don't know what it tasted like really. The texture and psychological aspects of it drown that out. I guess it wasn't terrible flavorwise or I'd have noticed but ick.

So. I ate it all. The whole bowl. I still think it's gross. My policy with these things is to try a food at least twice, so I guess some day I'll brave it again but... not for a while. Ick.

I don't see what Paka likes about it either.
If you have to make yourself eat it twice, at least try it a different way? Menudo is still tripe. Go to a good mexican place for Sunday breakfast sometime and get the Menudo. It should come with a pho like spread of chopped onions, crumbled dry oregano, lemon wedges etc. for you to add to your soup.

Hmmm...

...not sure I'd try it myself. Still, maybe it was just the way it was prepared and used.

Oh, yes certainly. That's the way my try-it-twice thing works. Once it could just be a bad experience. Not prepared right or something. Two times at two different places.

I once tried baby octopus....

Now I'm not squicked by eating octopus, but damn if it wasn't the toughest thing I've ever eaten in my entire life! It was virtually unchewable :(

I never thought it had much of a taste, I've only had it with tomato sauce.

Eh.

Shouldnt be like that -- was how it was prepared.
