Dreams with Sharp Sticks up their Butts

Ugh. Opening this weekend is Dreams with Sharp Teeth, a film about and starring the world's most self-important writer, Harlan Ellison. Here. Have a trailer. It's only slightly less painful than the chihuahua movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmfzKKM49uY

In high school I had a really good relationship with my English teacher. We read Repent Harlequin said the Ticktockman in class. I raised my hand and asked the teacher with perfect seriousness "This author is really up his own butt, isn't he?" I don't recall if laughter ensured.

It was a great short story, but I think I totally tuned into the Ellison douche bag vibe somehow through that text.

After watching the preview, I actually kinda want to see this. I mean, he is self important, but he is also a good writer, you know? Once he's dead we'll all remember him fondly, "What a character that Harlan Ellison was! They don't make two like that."

I could not have phrased it better, myself.

Beverly Hills Harlan Ellison

Great, now I'm picturing a huge Busby Berkeleyesque array of Harlan Ellisons singing the Harlan Ellison song, in which every line ends with the phrase "Harlan Ellison", and then one of them pops up and exclaims, "Ay, Harlan Ellison!"

I burned out on Ellison thanks to a couple of stories in an anthology.

The first story, I don't know who even wrote it, but it had this nifty twist that this utopian future society decided to find a perfect example of the pre-society world, and the surprise ending was they got Jack the Ripper.

The second story was something Ellison authored. He apparently was so inspired by the first story that he had to write the sequel. It was basically an incredibly uninspired gore-fest. And I went, wait, this is the guy? This is the self proclaimed genius of the age and that's the best he can come up with faced with this kinda novel plot idea?
