You know... Per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITER the projected cost of ITER is only about 20B USD. Sure, it's an experimental project, not meant for production use but seriously... For the cost of Bush's war for Oil so far, we could have taken 10 or 15 stabs at harnessing fusion reactions for power and had money left over.

If we hadn't wasted our money in Iraq, we could have been well on our way to quite possibly finding a permanent solution to power needs. Thanks again Bush. You're a GREAT leader. You know... If you REALLY wanted to 'beat' Iraq, the only resource they really have is oil. If the entire world had cheap power from another source, they'd be defeated utterly.

Instead you dicked around and threw away our money fighting a war you can't win. The EU is carrying on the ITER research and there's a good chance they'll get it to work and that means France will 'defeat' Iraq. Not you. And cheap/clean power will first be under the control of the EU, not the US. We'll be left behind. All thanks to you. Congrats on that.

But Bush and his cronies don't have money invested in fusion reactors. Nor do they have money invested in sugar-cane-based biodiesel (the closest they get is the corn lobby). They don't have money invested in solar power.

And so for the sake of a few rich mens' ROI there are young men and women being scarred psychologically if they get off that easy; safe renewable energy is ignored in favor of a source almost as antiquated as coal; even the EU countries who are technically our allies think of us as blustering, trigger-happy bullies; and whoever dominates the economic future, it's damn well not going to be the USA.

I'm sure that like the Reagan years the massive failure of the Bush administration to provide economic prosperity and long-term fiscal growth, will be ignored in the future by people who will hype only the "moral values" and the blind nationalism of this time period. Pray that I'm wrong.

Its really sad. I want to see a big list of things that could have been done with that kind of money. 80 billion dollars? That could have done SOoooo much.

#28 Give every American aproximately $240

or something like build (20) 500MegaWatt solar energy plants across the US...

80B? That's a fraction of the president's first request for money to fund this stupid war. The current bill is at nearly 500B and it's now projected by most economists that the total bill will be closer to 1.2 TRILLION dollars. That's $1,200,000,000,000 That would pay my rent for the next hundred thousand years. It's an obscene amount of money, and what do we have to show for it with the way it's been spent?
