The used bookstore across the street from my office carries old laser discs. I generally don't look at them because they're bulky and I can find most of the stuff on them on DVD. Yesterday though, while I was there with Jon, I saw something I had to stop and look at.

It was a collection of the first 14 episodes of the Flintstones plus interviews with animators and a bunch of the old ads that the Flintstones were in back in the early 60s.

I'm not a fan of the Flinstones. The animation was generally pretty terrible and the stories were tedious, but John K is quite a salesman.

See. What caught my eye was Fred pinching Barney's nipple on the cover.

This was the edition of the collection that John K had lovingly crafted, including a fake TV guide for all the episodes it contained.

He talked about all the differences between these early episodes and the later ones that I didn't care for and... ya know... While I wouldn't ever have paid the original price for the collection ($125) for the price of less than a movie ticket or eating lunch out, I figured I'd give it a try.

I researched online first, of course. The DVD prints of the Flintstones do not have the John K treatment or the commercials. They're bland and apparently designed for 'family' viewing.

I'll try to get around to watching them this weekend and compare the uncut first episodes with the ones I remember from my childhood in the 80s.
