Holy fuck.

Two weeks ago, I got a ticket for not coming to a 3-second stop at a traffic light when making a right turn. There was no oncoming traffic and whatever, but I did technically break the absolute letter of the law. The cop wasn't a total dickhead about it, IE didn't talk down to me, give me a hard time, etc, so I was going to let it go, but you know. No fucking wonder he was being so 'nice'. He wrote me a FOUR HUNDRED DOLLAR TICKET.

What the FUCK!? If I'd had my window busted and my radio stolen, I'd be out less money. I got carjacked!

Seriously here. I don't drive a BMW or something. I've got a somewhat beat up Nissan Sentra. 400 dollars PLUS I'd need to shell out another hundred or so to be talked down to by some ex gym-coach at a traffic school if I don't want my insurance rates to go up.

Now there's the quality of america for you. Parts get stolen off my bike, the fucking pigs toss up their hands and go, 'What do you want us to do?' and then they turn around and steal even more from me, and if I don't want the insurance people to steal still more, I have to pay some dickhead ex gym coach even more money to talk to me like a 3rd grader.

You know. I really don't need a fucking car. Merry fucking christmas! HO HO HO!

Yanno they had a chance to reinvent themselves after 9/11. People looked to cops as HEROES then.

They could have ditched the bad and kept the good, the ones not fucked up yet.

But since shit floats, the ones at the top must want to keep themselves surrounded by idiots.

I've tried, I really have, to have respect for them. But they keep violating my trust time and time again.

Ya know, I did tell you that taking the traffice course cost more in fines than not...

I say challenge it. As a fine it's very high, and does not match the crime. It's like 10% of your monthly income - which doesn't sound like much, but 30% of your monthy income is taxes already, and this is higher than a car payment.

And you have a very good driving record. Challenging it and saying 'I have a good driving record' should work.

And lastly, you can't pay more for insurance, because you've already lost your good-driver discount via the fender-bumper you did last year.

If you challenge the ticket in court, there's a good chance the officer who wrote it won't show up (I've read somewhere the average is about 50%), and the ticket will be automatically dismissed on the spot.

I've read that you may be able to increase your odds of automatic dismissal by finding out what days the officer has off and trying to get that as your court date.

Is there a law in the books that sets the price for this violation? $400 for not coming to a complete stop sounds ridiculously high .. as if the cop just made up some number on the spot. Its kinda like getting a coke at a bar because you're the designated driver and the bartender charges some arbitrary amount depending on how much he/she likes you.

This sort of crap is why I, a law-abiding citizen, hate cops. (Have I said this on your LJ before? I honestly can't remember...) Earlier this year, after seeing "The Science of Sleep" downtown (because that's the only place it was playing, otherwise I wouldn't go anywhere near downtown), trying to get on the freeway to get home, I wandered right into a speedtrap. The damn cop was on foot, and stepped out into the street to motion me over next to where his buddy had a radar gun. He STEPPED OUT into the street in front of my MOVING CAR. Does that sound to you like I was going some dangerously high speed?
