The last week I've been watching cartoons and drawing from them or drawing in the style of them. Definitely starting to have an effect on my artwork, and in a good way!

Here's some recent stuff from my sketchbook that I liked enough to ink and scan.

The dopey horse, beaver, and catapillar are pretty directly inspired by the cartoons I was watching. The peppy squirrel a little less so, but still definitely influenced. Angry-man I drew in response to something Stacey said tho I forgot the context now. The little wiggly hairs on his head make me giggle.

The ring-tailed snail thing is the fault of Nickelodeon. When I was sick I was watching cartoons and they said, "What would Gary from Spongebob and from Avatar look like if they were mixed together?" and I drew this quickly before the show came back and they showed their version. I liked mine a lot better. :)

Today in my animal drawing for animation class, we began talking about fanciful beasts and combining animals and proportions. First creature up was a gryphon. But the instructor didn't have references for an eagle when trying to just us bone structure, just a chicken, but to me, this idea was FAR better than a gryphon. While everyone else was drawing eagles-lion chimeras, I went to work on a turkey-gryphon! I think it looks more convincing and flight-worthy than most gryphons I've ever seen.

Next he showed us a book titled, 'Insanely Twisted Rabbits' (which I ordered a used copy of later off amazon because I really liked it) That partially inspired the two freaky little monster-things beneath the turkeygryph. then we moved in to completely made-up animals and stylization (the two horse-like creatures next to the piano-beast). My next class that evening was of course piano class. :)

That's it for now tho. Way past bedtime. :) Nini! :)

Michel Gagne, who did Insanely Twisted Rabbits, was GoH at Anthrocon a few years ago. He's awesome.

I like the winged thing, what the winged thing is I dont know, but I still like it (turkey-gryphon!?!? :D) .... Oyie, this reminds me I need to get back to doing art myself instead of goofing around on Lj.
