Stopped at the secondhand book shop after work yesterday and picked up bookes 1-3 of 'Designer's Guide to Color' for myself and Stacey. I've mostly got colour but sometimes it's nice to flip through something and pull out a palette that would look good on a hotel wall. Also, they have lots of commentary on color theory and, it's not bad to just look at stuff for ideas sometimes.

On the shelf below the color guides was a stack of about 15 copies of 'Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain'. I know lots of people that swear by this book and just about everyone I know has read it. So I sorted through and found the cheapest copy.

Started reading it last night and... seriously, I don't know how anyone else has had the patience. The preface just makes me want to punch her in the head, 'Ooooh! I've always had a talent for drawing. Yackity smackity blah blah blah. I'm a true arteest. I have the arteest's 3rd eye, you see.' (If only it were written in a tone that shameless and amusing.) More-over, the first half of the book seems to be dedicated to the purpose of hyping the book and extolling her previous employment at the department of redundancy department. You see, if you're reading this book, you must be a very slow child who needs everything repeated 30 or 40 times. In fact, the first ~50 pages of the book are hyping the book, talking about her majyckal arteest vision, and how great an artist you might be able to be.

*This had better be worth it or I'm going to twist the heads off some puppies and slap their bodies against a canvas in a crossover performance art that would horrify both Jackson Pollock and Marilyn Manson and then submit it to Yerf.

Seriously here. There's no magic about being able to do artistic stuff. The real difference is that she got encouraged when she was a kid and looked at the world with the imagination of a child and was able to carry that into adulthood because it wasn't beaten out of her. That's the magic! She isn't a special danity butterfly and the rest of us wearing paper wings. Also, if she's such a great and fabulous artist, howcome the only things that turn up under her name on images.google.com are pictures of books and not of works. Shouldn't she be a famous arteest if she were truely great?

None the less, I shall dilligently and masochistically read the whole book and do the exercises. My bet though, is that I'll still suck at the end of it all.

*Okay, I'm really a pacifist and wouldn't harm any animal, or even a pompous writer.
