Every now and then you have one of those days where you really feel like you're living in the future.

For a while now, Stacey has been wanting to buy this washer/dryer combo that fits in the limited space we have in our house. On Monday (after she held my underwear hostage for a week) I capitulated and we now have the most advance washing machine on the face of the planet. o_O

Eef. Expensive but there's a lot of rebates on it because of the energy efficiency plus we spend ~100/mo on laundry currently and there's the hassle of synching up schedules to get it done and the time/fuel to go to the laundry mat plus we also frequently end up eating out while laundry is running so.. After I got over the initial sticker shock, I'm feeling a little better. Also, it is greener than almost anything else out there so... It's a nice machine. It's also pretty neat that when you spin the rotors, even if it's not plugged in, that generates enough power that all of it's systems come online and it chirps happily at you. :D

In fact, that's the interesting part about this washing machine. It's very personable! It makes happy chirpy noises and has pretty LED displays and shiny buttons and is so quiet when running that it doesn't even upset our cats (one of whom is exceptionally skittish) Peggy is right, it is a bubbledoll! It's designed to make you like it. :)

Anyhow, the washer arrived yesterday. Installation would have been easy but of course, one of the facets leaked when it was unstoppered. So I went to the hardware store to get a new one. That went okay, except we shut off the main water to the house to fix it. When we turned on the water again, that facet didn't leak but the main valve to the house was now dumping water all over the place. So we went out to where the meter is and I shut off the water there. Oof. That took a lot of work, it was really stuck. Then we disassembled the value and went to get a new one. Of course, they didn't make the same one anymore and so the threading and stuff was just very slightly different from what we had. (We found out after a lot more work) so we ended up repacking the old one and building new gaskets for it. Put it back together, turned the water back on, and verified we fixed it. (It only took replumbing half the house!)

After that, we went to IHoP and on the way saw one of those little 3-wheeled pod cars. Cute!!! I started really feeling like I was in the future! And then after IHoP, Peggy and I went out walking and looking for some stuff for a project, when we encountered [livejournal.com profile] roon and [livejournal.com profile] amilori (or rather, they spotted us) and they took us out to dinner in their electric hybrid vehicle. ^_^

sometimes I get so down about the future with the way politics is going but then there's days like this were I realize that some of the neat futury things I wanted to see are coming to pass. We're just a bit behind schedule is all.

I had a washer like that, similar, no LED or chirps, and rather small, but I loved it!

First saw it in England, and when I got back was dying to own one.

Saved a lot on my bills, and did a nice job. Good stuff.

This is the 22lb load washer so it's pretty big.

You speak in past tense as though you don't have it anymore. What happened to it?

Also, was it a washer and dryer or just a washer? I thought the combined washer and dryer in a single unit were pretty new. (But I admittedly don't go shopping for stuff like that very often)

Combined washer/dryer, first had it in England as washer/dryer in 96 (and he had it for a while I guess) and then not too long ago on Ocean Parkway. What happened was my building turned off the water without warning, and it tried to run without water and burned the motor out. :(

I would have gotten one again if I could have afforded a nice big one like that. The one I had was much smaller and they've gone up in price.

Combo units like this have been very common in Europe and Japan for the last decade.

I've been wanting one for five years, and this one in particular since a year after we moved in. The fact that it cost the same as the green stacked units is what sold me.

Yesterday was lovedly, with warm donuts (even if they were mass produced over sugared puffy things) and movies was wonderful.

...If only it wasn't marred by the bicycle shop of the future. Note: Do not shop at the Evolution Bike Shop. The service is terrible, the new owner is rude and fired all the old staff and ran off the kids who used to hang out there. ...And he didn't even have any interest in selling me a bicycle. There's no reason to go to that shop.

Like, is he trying to run the shop under? o.O Do they all even have a clue? Like, If I went in and asked for a rear wheel using a 5 cross pattern on the outside and a 4 cross pattern on the freewheel side, would they be like, 'duh? what that mean?'

One apartment I lived in had a stacked washer/dryer. They kinda sucked. O.o Top loading washer, that was held too close to the dryer so you couldn't actually open the lid all the way. -.-;; Worst design possible which still leaves it mostly useable. x.x

But one has a whole wall full of holographic memory blocks and a moral dillemma making him crazy, while the other just does laundry and loves you for it.

Oh, neat. I like being able to do two loads at once with individual washer and dryers, but I think the extra space would be more beneficial.

If my washer or dryer ever need replacing, I might get that, or similar... but they're working fine, for now.

Weird. I just got a Spam e-mail for a washer/dryer combo. o_O

I've got a Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer. Biggest Washing Machine Ever. It's the same depth and width as a standard refrigerator, and only about 2 feet shorter. Each piece... Fortunately it's out in the garage.

The washing machine vibrates like crazy when it starts spinning. It would make a good sex toy. :) It's got a delayed start, so I can load it in the morning, and it'll be finishing up just as I'm coming home. But it still has to go through the dryer. A washer/dryer combo with delayed start would be sweet.
