Heehee. So I went and looked up my Amazon.com order for this book I wanted and just for grins, I thought I'd see what books the recommend for me.

I was somewhat amused by the response. http://circle.twu.net/photos/amusing/amazon.jpg

Ha! NONE! They can make NO recommendations for me! I fit no consumer patterns! ^_^

Of course, the truth is, my pattern is quite predictable. I just don't buy things from Amazon.com unless there's no other way I can purchase them. I don't make sense to them because I only buy at local independently-owned bookshops.

Anyhow. The annoyance part now. I'm in the ARB so that means I'm stuck using a PC. First off, let me say that Internet Exploder crashed 3 times just looking at www.space.com. Also, unlike Unix and the Mac, it does not have TAB auto-completion of text. In fact, it doesn't even remember URLs well and thinks there's a difference between http://some.stupid.address and some.stupid.address.

Next, OMFG MS-Paint sucks ass. Sweet monkey Jesus. I'll write them a better paint program if they want. For FREE! The can have it, just get rid of that f***ing piece of crap. You'll notice my screen-grab looks really assy. MS Paint (apparently) doesn't let you set the quality of the JPG so somehow they managed to make it REALLY blocky _AND_ a massive file size (454K) Seriously. WTF. The .GIF it generated was even more pathetic. Seriously. WTF.

Now finally... About their filesystem structure... Gah. Simply idiotic and the file browser too... UGH. And ... EIGHT AND THREE with the whole ~1 crap when you open a terminal prompt and do DIR? STILL!?!?!?! Holy freaking crap!

Why why why WHY are people still using this OS? Gah. I switched like two years ago and have never regretted it.

Y'know I have no fucking idea what planet you're from.

You and other ranting anti-MS-heads rail and rail about crashes and shit, on and on, never ending.

What, are you still looking at Windows 3.1?

Christ. I've used MS products nonstop for the last 15 years and I have no idea where you're getting all the foaming drama over crashes. I'll have you know that IE has not crashed even once in all the years I've used it.

Maybe it simply smells your fear.

The platform wars will never end! Thankfully our game engine has Mac and Windows builds, so we can cover all bases. ;-)

That'd probably be Windows 98SE or ME, since Paint couldn't save to anything but Windows Bitmap for a long, long time, and you still have the 8.3 DOS filename restriction.

To answer the question of why? -- because it came with the machine. Yes, I am a user and I pretty much put up with what ever is at hand, as long as it doesn't blow up.

My OS is Windows XP and saving jpegs in MS Paint suxxors big time. So, I save as a bitmap in Paint, and use PhotoStudio 2000 to convert to jpeg. I avoid crappy mottled gif approximations in MS Paint by using only the limited gif palate. Fewer colours, yes, but WYSIWYG.

The nested filesystem architecture in XP is a real pain in the ass. Not only are you saddled with folders with fruity "My Whatever" filenames that you can neither delete nor rename, but the whole structure is decided in advance for you and then hidden behind a series of shortcuts. With some programs I have to search for a hell of a long time to find the target/destination folder I was looking for! X-p indeed!

Apart from that, XP has been quite stable. I leave my computer on pretty much year round and it doesn't crash. It just slows down a lot after a month or so.
