This after seeing this lovely bit of crap about homophobic churches I made a bumper sticker for those that are interested.

I may not believe in God but most homophobes do. This design doesn't pass judgement, it doesn't say their beliefs are ignorant, it is designed just to make them worry about their own damned soul instead of mine.

Funny, I didn't make this sticker for me so much as for friends who happen to be christian. I hope it's considered a decent message. I've just always found the 'Love the sinner, hate the sin' line to be full of arrogance and contempt for their own god. It's such a common defense to excuse their ugliness that I want to call them on it. This seemed like the right message to me.

I'd love to read the "lovely bit of crap," but as harpold noted, it's a protected entry. Would it be possible to, say, post the text here?

Is this sort of a special church? With bicycle helmets and caregivers and short-buses? :D

As a bumper sticker, I think the design and layout work very well. Nonetheless, something about the message itself tweaks me, and I've been thinking about it since you posted it, trying to figure out why.

Talking about this with someone I know who is Christian, I think I was able to quantify what is tweaking me about the message. It's supposed to be nonjudgmental, but it is, still. The message says that you know the person reading it better than they do - you know you're lying, and they are going to hell because God knows the truth. It's also very confrontational.

I fully agree with the message you're trying to get across, but I think this isn't doing a good job of conveying it. I'm still trying to come up with a different wording that might do a good job of leading them into the position where they have to think about this, without it being so directly confrontational...

Maybe changing the wording slightly:
CAN YOU REALLY TELL YOURSELF
YOU ONLY HATE THE SIN?
GOD KNOWS THE TRUTH.

Maybe even slightly shorter:
CAN YOU HONESTLY SAY
YOU ONLY HATE THE SIN?
GOD KNOWS.

This wording is slightly less confrontational. Someone could look at it, and say ‘Yes, yes I can.’ I don't believe in painting everyone with the same brush, because I was raised Catholic and I know Christians out there who are good people; who really truly can say they hate the sin, not the sinner.

Of course, that does still require you believe that homosexuality is unnatural and a sin, which I don't. I've seen too many examples of ‘deviant sexual behaviors’ in the animal world to think it is either unnatural or a sin; indeed, it is rather normal and mundane. Nonetheless, those who this message is for do believe it is a sin. I don't honestly believe any amount of discussion with them will change that; especially not bumper sticker wisdom. Maybe it will make them think, though.

Only time can change it, I think.

Hmm. Thanks. Thos epoints are well-taken. I can definetely see what your friend ment.

I guess its' my nature to be a bit confrontational tho. :)

I know I'm late, but you realise that those 'signs' were made using a 'Make your own churchsigns' website, right?
