Okay... Just for those who have sensative combinations of XY chromosones, here's heads up. This post is a mean nasty angry annoyed feminist rant!

You have been warned!

So. Reading through my nifty old 50's comic book, inevitably, there's going to be one REAL clunker of a story in there. I scanned the whole 8 pages of it so you can see what I'm ranting about.

http://circle.twu.net/pos/

Now, yes, this one story is insipidly stupid on so many different levels even if you ignore the blantant lack of scientific understanding, but there's something more irksome about this story.

I've seen it before. Not this same exact story, mind you, if it were just one guy writing a stupid wank story, I could deal with it, but in truth, I can think of about a DOZEN variations on this story. 'All the men have died due to some disaster, or more likely, something stupid they did to themselves'. Brave men from Earth find 'The planet of the women!', 'Though the women have not seen cock in 2000 years, they are desperate for it! Empty sucking voids waiting to be filled! Of course, they're always shy giggly girls except when they're tough amazons just waiting for the right cock to subdue them. The amazon stories are actually sort of worse. That whole 'Right Cock' bullshit story. And at the end of the story, the real twist is never, 'The women turn out to be blood sucking sirens from beyond the grave that kill the stupid men who bought such a stupid story.' No. The REAL twist is that they jump into monogamous relationships with the first men they meet because two whole nuclear families will repopulate a planet!

See how far you can make it reading this story without banging your head on something. I got to page 5 but I was sedated with tea and cakes.

I'm interested. Just how many versions of this story are there? it seems to be one of the standard sci-fi jerk-off stories and how many different authors. I love sci-fi and a lot of the time I can even bite the bullet and ignore the sexism of the times the stories were written in, but this RARE GEM story keeps popping up and every time I see it, it churns my stomach.

X-Posting to Feminist-Rage.

I'm not sure why these guys cared about the planet of women since they were obviously screamingly gay.

Does that explain why they kept walking a mile in the desert barefoot?

Perhaps you've read Robert A. Heinlein? Many of his books are barely tolerable. If it isn't the sexism, it's the gung-ho militarism.

What wonky biology! YY females? Parthenogenesis isn't self fertilization. What, no sperm bank?

Well I kept hoping that the end of the story would return the men to their own time, right at the beginning of a nuclear war or something...

Where on earth did you find this crap?

It's from the Weird Science Fantasy comics from 1953. I'm guessing this is the 'fantasy' part. Most of the rest of the stories were pretty good. A lot of the typical sci-fi fair of the time to be sure, but fun to read. :)

Not to mention the ultimate illogic that just 'cause you show up on an alien planet, and the aliens look human, you'll be able to fertilize 'em, no problem, no chromasomal disjunction, no RH factor like complications, nope!

Heh. At first, I was willing to let the "YY" thing slide, because hey, they're aliens, maybe their chromosomes work differently. Of course, if that's the case, their repopulation scheme of bringing humans from Earth wouldn't work, would it?

But NO, they turn out to be human women from future Earth! So the YY thing is WRONGO!

The stories in "Genus" are written MUCH better than this. :}

Oh, God I needed a good laugh.

What really got me giggling was the fact the guy lights a cigarette after "waking up".

Two men, out in the desert alone, wearing tight clothes... GHEY! "Better be careful, Marty. Duck down, till we see what comes out!" "Boy! Would I like to get a close look at that baby!" GHEY!

Go to Borders or wherever and pick up Y: Last Man On Earth, it's a much better graphic novel. There are some bits that make the eyes want to roll, but they're very few, and I can totally see much of the storyline being plausable (given that all the men of the world falling dead at the same time can be seen as possible).
