Yesterday I woke up [livejournal.com profile] centauress and [livejournal.com profile] peganthyrus with the intent of going hiking at Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz. [livejournal.com profile] paka and [livejournal.com profile] chirik were also coming along.

Actually let me back up to the night before and mention the Toilet Fish incident.

On second thought, let us never speak of that again.

Annnyhow... Peggy and I walked to Safeway and bought some horrible Safeway donuts to provide fuel and energy for the hike. (Or at least make us all car sick) Chirik ran late so Jon, Peggy, and I laughed like fools about that incident we agreed never to speak of again and Stacey mostly just looked confused and annoyed. After Chirik arrived, we hit the road for Santa Cruz!

Natural Bridges was nice. Not as nice as on a weekday when there are no tourists and you can lay on your back staring up at the butterflies and listen to the scintillating of their wings. On the other hand, there was a nice big cluster of monarchs and the sunlight was just beginning to hit them as we arrived and they'd just begun to shift from drab browns to vibrant oranges and reds as the whole cluster started to pulsate slowly with the flittering of thousands of wings. We stayed there quite a while despite the tourists. (I used to live not a mile from there and would often walk there in the winter. I guess I am a tourist now, but I don't think of it that way as the novelt has long worn off but the beauty has not)

After the butterflies, we parted ways with [livejournal.com profile] centauress She walked to her friend Frank's house to watch the new Lemony Snickett movie. I need to probe her a bit and find out whether or not I wanna go watch it.

We did the tide-pools but it was a half moon and the tide was already starting to come in so it wasn't a fantastic run. Still, I think the did get to see all the basic critters except I didn't see any crabs (cancer or hermit) No shrimp or fish either, of course. Promised Jon I'd take him to the hidden beach at the new or full moon. In general though, we did have a good time, and I found the perfect present for someone I was having difficulty shopping for. ;)

After the tide pools we took one of my famous, 'I'm sure this the right trail' hikes and... To make a long story short, ended up jumping a fence so we could get back to the car.

Sooo... Letsee. We drove up the coastline. Stopped briefly at the monolith sculpture to show it to Jon and Peggy and entertain ourselves until we couldn't sit down. Then we drove on to the Surf museum. Wandered the museum for a bit and then we watched people surfing for a long time. *sigh* I really miss surfing. :} Might do a board rental excursion with Jon this summer. Would be fun. Definetely sticking with 'safe' surf spots though. *No more excitement for me.

We headed downtown after that. Got some food at Saturn (got the 80's Plushes Table; my punishment for signing the party in as Scooby Doo, I think. :} Umm. Food was good. Then we hiked the mall. Front Street Thrift is gone. :( Perg is different. Back porch is closed, different crowd of people. Just different. Not as good. Game A Lot has been replaced by a clothing store. Santa Cruz is becoming full of Ghosts to me. I found five buck on the street. It went a long ways. Bought Peggy a red slip dress she found at the thrift store, gave a dollar to a homeless person who was being bugged by some churchies and she said she didn't need church to survive. (Worth my money!!!) and the remaing $1.50 went to buy Jon some old HP Lovecraft books.

We finally found Peggy an acceptably horrible coat at the right price! It's not as horrible as the great horrible coat but it does accent her spindly insectiodishness. By this time thought, we were at Logos and a bit tired from having hiked around all day. So while Jon looked at some regrettable gaming books I browsed the art books, found two nice and inexpensive books on pattern. One African Design motifs, the other Pre-Columbian mexican. I also found an interesting book, 'Animation Techniques' by Roger Noake that reminds me a bit of Kit Labourne's 'The Animation Book' but is possibly even better. Filled with lots of non-traditional animation techinques looked interesting and inspiring so I picked it up. Then we wandered over to the comic section.

I don't think I can say anything more about the book than that. I bought it as well. Including the two lovecraft books for John, the total for shopping was about $20. Good haul!!! ^_^ We walked up to Lulu's, sat outside and drank coffee and looked at the 6 Voyages of Lone Sloanne. and had a great time! Finally we collected Stacey and headed home. After a bit of hunting for some other stuff that I'd bought a couple years ago and now cannot find, Peggy and I wandered off to Dennys to look at Lone Sloanne some more and actually eat something.

All in all, not a bad day.

*I stopped surfing about 12 years ago. I was at Pleasure Point in 6-8ft waves. Basically my ankle cord came undone, I hit an outcurrent and was back floating far enough out to sea that I couldnt' see land and it was getting dark. It took me almost two hours to get back to land and I was more than a mile down the coast where there was nothing but sharp rocky cliffs. I let a big wave slam me high up on the cliff wall, then climbed up the side (bare hands and feet, hypthermic) My water-soaked flesh was cut to ribbons and I hobbled back to my car on bloodied feet, goy my money, and drank about a half gallon of hot miso soup at the Pink Godzilla. I'd seen my board smashed on the rocks below as I walked back to my car but I didn't even bother to try to fetch it. My suit was trashed, my board was thrashed, and I wasn't very good at surfing anyhow (that's how I got in this mess. In waters way above my skill level) Anyhow, it seemed like a good time to call it quits.

Holy shit!
About the surfing accident, I mean.
I almost lost an eye while surfing, but yours takes the cake.

Oh, this was a while back.
I haven't surfed since '92 or thereabouts.

My accident was mostly my own stupidity.
I was swimming back out to catch some waves. A pretty big wave was about to break
right in front of me, and I didn't have time to get set up to catch it, so I dove through it.
The wave caught my board and dragged it along, stretching the leash strapped to my ankle.
I had barely resurfaced, with my eyes still closed, when something struck my forehead.
I recoiled and opened my eyes. My surfboard was laying nearby. I brushed my hair away from
my face and looked at my hand. There was blood on it.

The big wave had dragged the surfboard along, putting tension on the rubber leash.
When the board finally broke free from the wave, it bungied straight back for me and struck me
roughly an inch above my left eyebrow. A few inches down and I could have lost my left eye.
I swam back to shore and had the lifeguard look at my wound. It was a fairly deep cut.
He cleaned it up and sent me off to Santa Monica Hospital emergency. They patched it up
with something like 15 stitches.

I still have the scar. And since that accident, my left eyelid droops a little.

It's not what made me stop surfing.
It's my weight that did that. Plus the water was getting really toxic locally.
I like the water and I miss it. I really wish I had a swimming pool.
