I don't suppose anyone knows much about harnesses, do they? Um. not that kind you dirty perverts. I mean the kind you use for rappelling. All of my data is very obselete and I don't know what brands are good. Any input appreciated. I did some searching online and am a little weirded that climbing gear is so cheap. I dunno if I could rappel thinking to myself. "I'm 200 feet above sharp pointy stalagmites and all that's holding me here is a $6.95 carabiner and $20 of rope. O_O

I need to explore his website when I get the chance:

And then I should wonder why MY website doesn't look like that...

There are professionally made harnesses. You'll see these used in movies and whatnot. But I was taught how to wrap a band about myself and tie it off properly that made a wonderful harness. Plus, we used "figure 8"'s for safety on top of a locking sleeve carabiner.

Umm.. You don't wanna do that in pitch black 200ft below the surface of the Earth and go down a rope into the inky blackness tho. Besides. Looks like it might run a hundred bucks for some good high quality gear. Hardly enough not to invest in some good stuff.

Heh. Harnesses are only for extended comfort, and to be able to get out of quickly. And the band I referred to is an extremely durable length of stuff that you can't stick a blade through, and I can't really describe with any success. Trick is, it's not terribly comfortable, you have to go through all the bother of looping it about your waist and legs and tieing it just right. As with anything, it's not always about money, but sometimes experience instead/too.

Father in law, who does this sort of stuff, says Black Diamond. Or at least that is what he told Dan.

BTW I looked it up on froogle, and Black Diamond looks so much nicer than Elk River, which makes the funny lookin harnesses that Dan wears.

Yah. I'd looked at the Black Diamond set and it was high on my list. They also have a women's design which might be nice as straps riding up isn't too much fun and I have pretty broad hips/thighs.

At the first vertical practice they're gonna let us try out some different gear so that may help too. I guess I'm just always the one to research everything before hand. :)
