Random Illustratoring
Feb. 14th, 2004 01:19 amI wanted to do art tonight but I couldn't seem to get motivated so I just fiddled around with a few odd things in Illustrator. I'm trying to learn something about simplification and stylization and character. Not sure exactly what I'm trying to learn but I've been playing with ideas. Anyhow, here's a mess of stuff from this evening.

Blah. Caricatures of midwesterners. In retrospect, I should note there is no story with the gun and the girl. This is just the way the landed on the page when I was doodling.

More unflattering drawings of midwestern ideals. You'd think I had something against them or something. Wildly gender-stereotyped characters sorta really do not appeal to me.
So... Guess that's everthing. Sorta very basic Illustrator fiddling I wish I were better at AI. I think the one thing that frustrates me most is trying to 'trace' my linework to add a seperate color layer. If I duplicate the lines and try to use the scissors, I get a lot of frustration because the JOIN command seems to suck and the pathfinder 'add' seems to behave annoyingly on unclosed shapes. If I try to trace the layer with the pen tool it is both slow and also get coverage gaps. If I could solve the fill problem to where it was friendly to use, I'd be immensely happy.
![]() | I liked the tetacle thing but now I get the strange feeling I've uploaded this one before. Ohwell. Its probably the best of the lot. |

These are actually the 3rd adn 4th pass of the same drawing. Taking a ballet leap and simplifying it down to a simple design. I'm not sure which one is more effective. I like some aspects of both. | ![]() |

![]() | Hrm. You'd also think I am seriously into the drug culture. I don't know what possessed me to draw these other than I find them strangely cute. | ![]() |
