Elegant Insect
May. 13th, 2004 09:01 amI suppose I'm odd. There's the most beautiful and elegant insect sitting on the screen in my office window. She's (notice me randomly assigning a gender to something I don't know the gender of) about an 7cm long overall and has a dainty wasp-like head with bright eyes to the side and antenae that are set straight forward. she has a very long swanlike thorax that makes up almost half the length of her entire body. It is surprisingly flexible as I watch her preen her wings. Her legs and wings are position in the last 1/5th of the thorax rather like the design of a preying mantis. Her abdomen is thin and tapered (like a butterfly) and ends in a long whip-like 'tail' which is about half as long as her body. this tail seems to be able to move and sense like an antena. Her wings are long and glassy extending to about the length of her tail. She moves in a very danty and thoughtful manner, flexing her neck and turning her head side to side, looking at things the way a bird might. For such a tiny creature she seems rather intelligent. I wonder what she is...
As a footnote: Google image-search for 'elegant insect' turns up disappointingly few matches and none of them are exotic alien xenomorphic illustrated forms. Something must be done to correct this.
