Dreamwidth?

So... How is dreamwidth? It looks like it has the one feature that's kept me from going to other journaling systems (IE a way to do some legacy updating to my LJ and not require a lot of hassle for people wishing to comment.

Mostly just curious although I have so little traffic on my LJ these days that I don't think moving would be a big issue.

As a host DreamWidth is most excellent. It has no adverts whatsoever, you get a good number of user icons and the admins are both open and informative. As it is still very new there is not the wide variety of bloggers as there are here, most of those that have migrated there from LJ seem to be interested in fan-fiction. Go here for a sampling: http://www.dreamwidth.org/latest.bml It still takes invite codes to get a slot, but they are very easy to acquire: http://dw-codesharing.dreamwidth.org/ (or you could ask me, I have some codes rotting away in an email somewhere, they're probably still good). As for migrating your LJ there, it seems that it is now possible to migrate the whole shebang, including comments. See: http://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=127 It is also easy to crosspost to LJ from DreamWidth. What DreamWidth doesn't have is storage to archive your pictures. Since Flickr is free and reliable (and doesn't stop displaying my pictures when the money runs out) this is not a problem for me.

Yeah. I haven't used LJ pictures at all.

I used to have a paid LJ account but let it lapse because of their arbitrary censorship a few years ago.

If you have a spare code, I wouldn't mind checking it out.

Yet another flavor of the day, which will either be not expanded, updated, or disappear randomly. Of course, friends lists and whatnot won't work across them, but... Why not insanejournal? Or whatever the one was before that? Hopping from random startup to random startup, demanding no metrics be taken or aggregates be perused, being a drain upon investments everywhere.

Ugh. I'm about ready just to ditch the whole idea of personal journals, despite the enriching it does to my life because of the lack of business model.

Can you not pan it until you've at least researched it? This one does actually have cross connectivity with LJ, imports comments, etc. LJ was once an untried technology too geez. You could have argued for Blogspot or wordpress or blogger. I'm interested in seeing what else is out there and it doesn't cost me anything to try.

I don't care about their technology. I care that they're not paying their employees based upon what they take in, but what promises they've given to investors, who can pull the plug whenever they want.

Hence not caring what brand, none of them manage that.

Well, I'll be adding you on dreamwidth. I don't use LJ any more except to read my friends list, and once cross-site reading is implemented I hope to never touch the damn thing. :>

I went with a different name on dreamwidth. pasithea
