Hurray for corn subsidies! And thanks to the time in which we were born, most of the people in my generation have been living on this stuff for decades! Thanks again baby boomers!

Ohwell. Since we moved, I've been trying to cut Coke out of my life. It's alarming how serious an addiction these drinks are. I've had about 15 glasses of the stuff in the past month but that's a bit of an improvement over the 60+/mo I had been averaging. It's unlikely I'll completely erase it from my life. Too much of an addict but I do hope to reduce it to an infrequent treat.

I wish it were easier to avoid sweet in general and HFC in particular. I find a lot of the off the shelf food much too sweet for my tastes. Though I guess it's less of a problem now. Since moving we've been making nearly all of our food from scratch. So happy to have a kitchen that's integrated into the living space again.

Replace "the occasional bottle of Coke" with "the occasional bottle of a small bottler's soda"; the latter are often made with sugar, and will proudly claim this on their label. I'll grab a bottle of Boylan's "Cane Sugar Cola" now and then, for instance.

Yeah. I can get entire cases of the mexican coke made with sugar around here. Mostly I find that drinking just carbonated water does it for me though. Fizziness seems to be a major part of the appeal.

We've been trying some of the local and national sodas as our sometimes-treat. But it doesn't stop coke from being exactly wonderful with pizza or sushi. Nothing beats that tingly, spicy fizz atop ginger and wasabi...

I made a very gradual transition.

Switched from sodas constantly, to flavor drinks, some of the juice mixes, then to REAL juice, and then plain old water.

I rarely have a proper soda, sometimes one of those vitamin water drinks (xxx good!), but mostly get those big jugs of water from Safeway.

As I was hearing somethings about diet, the idea is to get to the point where you don't crave it.

these days I have found several good real juice drinks that satisfy that sweet tooth, making sure to change up with something new and interesting every so often. Other than that, cold water does well.
