Crappy website

Not that I'm questioning the article, but do be careful linking to Religioustolerance.org, as it is a known Scientology front group, and while it may delight them to distribute information that is anti-christian, and not necessarily pro-Scientology you're probably still in danger of creepy cult bias.

Hmm. Good to know. I got the link from someone else and was thinking Jon would find it interesting and be able to confirm or deny it. IMO, scientologists are as bugnuts as the rest of them.

I would estimate the average Scientologist is more bugnuts than the average Christian.

I just skimmed this, but it looks kinda like The World's Sixteen Crucified Saviors by Graves Kelsey. It was written in the late 1800's, and is in the public domain now, but I can't find the text on Google. (I have a copy of it on disk here.) Anyway, I read it over 10 years ago, and it's a classic, and blah blah, and apparently there's been more research since the late 1800's and so some of the info in it is actually wrong. But anyway…

It's thesis is that the whole Jesus Christ myth in the New Testament, is copied directly from older, more ancient religions. Things like the Krishna myth have 217 (or so) things in common with the [Jesus] Christ myth.
Born to a virgin, birth foretold by angels.
King killing all first born babys.
Three wise men bearing gifts.
Born on Dec 25.
[blah blah blah]
Had twelve followers
Got nailed to a tree, etc.

The whole good vs. evil gods thing came from Zoroastrianism. The whole Jesus-Mary-John the Babtist trinity came from Horus-Isis-someone Egyptian myths.

etc. etc.

Anyway, I don't suppose that I can get a Ride to the airport [SJC] from you, say around 4PM this afternoon?

Sure! I was running quite late this morning so I drove my car to work. I'll head to your house around 3:30

Wow. That's freaky; I'd always assumed the Jesus-as-god thing to be so Hellenized that I'd assumed that that the non-Jewish chunks of the NT were Greek borrowings, and I'd never once thought about Egypt as an influence.
