Okay, I think the coolest scene so far in the OT is where Solomon builds a new house for God (recorded in excruciating detail) and the take the ark into it, remove the staves from the rings, and open it.

Inside there are only two stone tablets but then the house fills with darkness, driving out all the priests.

Nothing else happens at this point. God just seems to be going through a goth phase.

You know, there's a number of people who are of the opinion that the Ark was some sort of nuclear power unit, which might explain lightning, the darkness it could release, special housings and the emerods, which also translates as boils or tumors.
Alien technology? Maybe a radioactive meteorite or chunk of potent ore?
