Yesterday, Stacey and I were supposed to get around to some long overdue cleaning, but of course I managed to find a way to delay this. :)
Actually, not really. Our living room isn't very big and needs more seating and there's been this 'pile of stuff' at the foot of the stairs that looks really unattractive for a long while.
The idea was to get a mission bench that would serve as seating and storage and contain the pile of stuff. Unfortunately, this has turned out harder than it would seem. Mission benches are either exceedingly ugly or insanely expensive, except when they're both of the above. It's stupid, given what simple things they are.
So.. A while back, Stacey had pointed out some heavy duty plastic bins at the hardware store that were both storage bin and seat. I'd turned my nose up at them because they were ew industrial grey plastic... But after looking at ugly $600+ mission benches, I decided to give plastic another look.
We'd seen some cute throw pillows at Han Kooks a few days earlier. So.. Hatchy plan! We measured the space, then went and chose a bin, then got a pillow, then went to JoAnne's and got some fabric that would compliment both pillow and room plus a sheet of 2" foam to put on top. Then we went home and I made a slip cover. So easy! Long straight stitches on non-stretchy cloth are fun to sew!
While I was doing that, Stacey started putting the bin together and discovered they'd given us the wrong model. Bastards! so she went back and got it exchanged, started putting it together and discovered that this one was the right model but was badly damaged. AUGH!
It did give me enough data to complete my measurements and finish the cover though, so she's exchanging that one today (3rd time is the charm, right?) and all the rest of it is complete.
All in all, I'm really happy with my work and think it's going to look pretty good when it's assembled. I amazed myself by not making a single mistake while sewing. No inside out seams, nothing in the wrong place, etc.
So all in all.. More seating, less crap! Yay!
Total cost ended up being about a hundred dollars (60 for the bin, 40 for the fabric and foam) A lot cheaper than anything we saw (that wasn't totally wretched and cheap) and a better match for the things in our house than anything we saw. Probably also a lot stronger and lighter than anything we could have bought that would have been made of wood too. (I tried jumping up and down on top of the demo model to check it's strength)
I'll take a couple of photos when it's all assembled.
