It was really nice and sunny out yesterday and I didn't really want to spend my day sitting in front of the computer even though I needed to do some work, so I stripped down to shorts and a cami (You know it must be warm if I'm doing that!) and went for a ride.
I asked Stacey if she wanted to come but she was playing WoW and couldn't. So I set off for the Steven's creek trail and decided to really crank it. I was riding a consistent ~20MPH. About 3 or 4 miles down the trail, my phone rang. Stacey had deliberately got in a fight with someone on WoW so she could get kicked out of the group so she could come cycling with me.
This worked out so great! It takes her a long time to get ready to do anything, and I'm generally impatient and I like to push a lot further and harder than she does. So she got ready while I rode back to the house, and then we set out again.
Down the creek trail and out onto the dikes and levees of the bay. Saw lots of neat birds. Redwings, mallards, wood ducks, a few geese, wrens, and even a couple of pigeons that were roughing it for the weekend.
Most of the way out we were riding into a wicked strong headwind and averaging 10 to 12MPH. We eventually made it up as far as Palo Alto (but this was with a lot of long out of the way loops and a few dead ends because some of the levees are gated.) We took a shorter path back, and with the wind at our backs so we made an average of 16MPH. Stopped for sushi at Satsumi (next to Albertsons, which we'd been meaning to try) It was quite good, then we rode the last mile home.
Total distance: ~6.5 miles on the first ride, ~24 miles on the second. Not bad at all.
The really strange thing is: Towards the end of the ride, I still had a huge amount of power. I was taking hills and bridges with no trouble and I'm not the least bit sore today. It's nice to be feeling fit again. I can't believe I ever let myself get so out of shape.
Anyhow. Gotta keep doing stuff like this. It's fun! :)
