This does make Judas sudden 'betrayal' make more sense, though I still like my own personal theory that they had a gay love affair going on and had a lover's spat.

On the other hand, Jesus did seem like a pretty depressive sort of guy and this kind of makes sense. He's afraid he won't get into Heaven if he kills himself, so he asks his friend to set things in motion which will end his life.

No wonder the church wouldn't like this story. It makes him so human, doesn't it? Mortal, afraid, uncertain. I think I could almost identify with this guy. He's the sort of person who'd probably be one of my friends. It's far easier to believe than all this 'son of God' nonsense.

Since I've made a lot of disparaging posts about religion lately, I suppose I should state for the record that, yes, I do believe Jesus probably existed, and he was probably an extraordinarily nice guy and would have been interesting to talk to. But he was just a man.

And Judas has to be guilty. There must be a goat. There has to be somebody to blame. It's the monkey way.

Which makes the Gospel of Judas kind of interesting. I mean, dude-goes-and-hauls-off-betrays-savior-suicides is thematically interesting, but leaves you wondering, well, why? Then you have a motivation and there's even more big overarching Jungian symbolism.
