... You know, it seems like a LOT of people I know have gotten laid off in the past couple of months.

Some really nasty thought has crept into my mind because of it.

The economy is the #1 thing that determines how people vote on an encumbent president. Shrub's 'economic recovery' wasn't really happening until a couple of months before the election and then all of a sudden, growth was 'higher than expected', but sales across Christmas were rather flat and since November, unemployment has been on the rise again.

What if campaign contribution limits caused some corporations to 'take one for the team'. Get those employment numbers up for the election and then once you've secured your prize pig, taper em back off again.

I actually had this thought a month ago but it seemed too paranoid to write about then. Now that there's another month's worth of employment records in... Gee... Wouldn't that be a great way to cheat the system?

I think you're on to something there....

When [livejournal.com profile] amelias comes back from Florida, I'll ask her about it...

My company just laid a couple people off, but it's not a downsizing in our case - it's just a ‘rebalancing of skills’ or somesuch nonesense. It means they got rid of people they didn't want anymore without the legal risks of firing them, and they'll be hiring replacements.
