Dec. 26th, 2004 12:55 pmYesterday was not a bad day all in all. I practiced keyboard for a bit, then Stacey took me to see the modern remake of 'Flight of the Phoenix'. It was alright but nowhere near as good as the original (except the flight scenes and effects shots, of course. I was happy that those were not insanely overdone as is wont to do lately, it seems)
After the movie we came home and Stacey was looking for a present for a firend that we misplaced and I got frustrated and decided it was well past time to clean up my office space so I plowed into it and began reorganizing the closet and getting rid of or putting away a lot of stuff that'd been accumulating.
Jon called and asked if I minded any company. I said it'd be okay so he and Ester came over and we went to Todai's for dinner (good thing took, I hadn't eaten all day!)
Then we came back here andsuffered through watched and entire DVD of Stacey's My Little Pony first season collection. it was painful, but while this was going on, I got some time to be social and sew. The sekrit red and black project is now half complete and looks pretty sharp so far. :)
After the MLP DVD they switched to watching Christmas cartoons on CN and I switched to reading the Hellboy comics Peggy had brought in before she left. It's alright although nazis and religious iconography are not really my thing. The prologues talking about the myths the stories were based on was pretty good though and the art style was interesting enough not quite as striking as Druillet.
I've been pondering the word 'riffing'. Jon and Peggy use it a lot. It's an interesting work, sort of non-comittal. It could be 'paying homage to' or 'making fun of' or a bit of both. It's the sort of word you use when you're doing something and you're not quite sure how your friends will react so you use a neutral word to find out. Or maybe it doesn't matter. Anyhow, I guess the following would be a 'riff'.
Anyhow. Guess that's it for yesterday. It's 1:30 now. I'd better get busy making today interesting! Err. Well. Other than the sketch. I did that today. *^_^*

![]() | Okay, so it lacks the pre-requisite religious iconography and nazi emblems. That was intentional. I forgot to include machines with lots of dials and gauges on them though. That was unintentional. I dunno. Something funny struck me in the way he draws headshapes for demonic creatures and the shape of a squirrel's head plus the similarities between Hellboy's physical appearance and my modeum decorum. Of course, instead of the lurking undead, it's a decaffienated squirrel and rather than a gernade, a can of soda but I did include tentacles and broken architecture and shafts of light and gothic archways. |

Date: 2004-12-26 11:32 pm (UTC)Mignola's style tickles me in completely different places than Drulliet does.
And... yeah, there's some "homage" in the use of "riff" and some "mock". Really, I think I use it the same way a jazz musician would (that's where the word comes from) - there's an established base standard, some old hoary cliche of an idea, some obvious handling, some well-worn song, and you play around with it. Having fun. Here's the idea, and here's what I'm doing with it, taking it as a base and improvising something.
I think there's a strong subliminal meaning of "improvisation" in the way I use "riffing". Done off the cuff, without direct forethought and planning (though it's based in my skill and in my examination of the original).
Anyway. Supper's ready. I shall eat.
