I _DO_ care!
May. 19th, 2010 11:06 amYesterday I said "I can't seem to care" but it was a lie. I do care. I care a lot. I think I'd just realized that being angry and powerless about it was not going to accomplish anything so I'd put it into the background.
But thanks to you guys, I realized I'm NOT powerless. I have a lovely brain and great friends and we can change the world if we only dare try.
So.. I NEED YOUR HELP!
I am going to animate something similar to this: <ahref="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bs88g5wbcfq">Relative Sizes of Planets and Stars but instead of showing how insignificant and tiny we are, show how big our impact is. Start with something understandable, something that fits into the headspace of normal people. The amount of oil from changing the oil in their car, then perhaps an average tank of gasoline, move up through Exxon Valdez, through this incident, and then start showing things like the 20,000,000 barrels a day consumed by the US alone, the total use of the planet, coal use, the quantities of emissions produced. This spill gives scale, it gives people an idea of the kind of damage we can do IN A SINGLE DAY, a week, a year.
Here's what I realized. If, by doing this, I can wake up even ONE person in the entire world, I have doubled my ability to change the world and I have made a difference.
So... Like I said. I NEED HELP.
I need pictures for photo reference.
I need to find appropriate music.
I need very conservative numbers that the naysayers will have difficulty arguing with.
I need brainstorming for the ideas of what things to include and in what order.
I know I would like to do some contrasting stuff like the recent volcanic eruption because I'm sick of hearing the right-wing claim we can't possibly do as much damage as a volcano but I need to be clever in this. I don't want people saying "Oh look! She thinks we're responsible for volcanoes erupting!", perhaps also WTC to give a sense of scale on the amount of devastation we're talking about (but again, I'm wary of detractors whining about being equated to terrorists and I need some cooler heads to give me a sense of what is going to be 'too far') or the size of the slick compared against the size of Katrina's storm.
I might need some help with the animation. I want to get this out quickly while it's still in people's minds.
Anything you've thought of that I've missed, hit me with it.
I am going to try to do the entire film this weekend.
We are not powerless.
Let's change the world.
