The broken sword is Tyrfing, not Stormbringer. Albeit, Tyrfing, nearly forgotten in modern times is certainly the blade that inspired many later fantasy writers. I might suppose Tyrfing truly existed once upon a time. Forged from a star, a black blade that never rusted, dripped blue fire and caused death to whoever it struck but was cursed and would eventually turn upon its owner.
It's almost plausible. A sword forged from a meteorite perhaps. steel, nickel, chromium, and carbon. Perhaps even slightly radioactive. It would be far harder than bronze or even iron. Mostly I'm being silly but I did a google search and found that if such a sword never existed, it does now.

Though swords were definitely made from meteorite iron. They just may not have been as fabulous as legend. :)
On a semi-related note... There's been a LOT of music written that incorporates StormBringer. Someone should compile a disk and play it. :)
