Well,

Just got back from seeing 'Coonskin' and a short interview with Ralph Bakshi. It turned out, what they had was a more like a first-cut and not the released version, so some parts were a bit more rough and raw than what you may have seen on pirate video. Anyhow... It was interesting. I think, for me, the best part was the ridicule he made of mafioso. I've seen so much in TV and movies that attempts to glorify them, when in reality, they're no different than the black gangsters on the street. The blend between cartoon and real world, of course, was not so good and the movie was very rough in that sense, but I knew that going in.

I think the interview afterwards was more interesting in the film. At the onset, I had my teeth clenched a bit because he had very sort of grating approach to the opening question and a rather obnoxious lisp. However, after he warmed up a little, the lisp became less pronounced and he moved on to topics which I was more interested in. Of particular note, he kept encouraging those animators in the audience to make a film, no matter what. Technical expertise and money isn't so important. He talked about how films should be in the here and now, raw and relevent. He also talked about jazz quite a lot and it made a connection for me about treating filmmaking more like improvisational jazz. I guess I did that a little with my early pieces 'Style' and 'Games', I just played a list of music and as it played, I wrote down what images slipped into my mind. Then I went back and storyboarded these ideas into something coherent and did the animation. I think of everything I've done, 'Style' is still one of my favourite pieces of animation.

All in all, it was a positive experience. I'd be interested in hearing more about this thing he was talking about with Spumco and a new feature-film, but that's probably classified. Anyhow... Geez! I need to get back to work on my own animation! History waits for no one!

Ralph is a sweet old man. Now. I hear he was a hellbeast during the course of most of his productions. Hopefully he will bring his unedited print of 'Coonskin' with him when he comes to visit Spümcø soon... it's my favorite of all his movies. Of the ones I've seen, at least.

I don't think I should say anything about the possible movie thing. I don't know the details anyway.
