Went to see Billy Plympton tonight and watch his new movie, 'Mutant Aliens'. Not a whole lot I can say about this other than it was fun and I think, for me, the fascinating thing was that he said pretty-much word for word exactly what I said in my LJ last night when i was talking about seeing the influences of other artists. I guess it's reassuring to feel that even if you are sorta small and insignificant, at least people who're close to the top have the same sorts of feelings, ideas, trials, and tribulations that you do.
'Mutant Aliens' is probably his best piece to date, in my opinion. It still contains a strong element of the sexual, vulgar, and disgusting, but it also has a story and plot and presents as a full and coherent piece instead of a series of shorts loosely bound together. If you're a fan of Plympton's earlier works or Invader Zim, or just little cute things that violently kill people and have perverse nasal orgies, you'll probably enjoy this film. If you're easily offended or have a shy stomach, avoid it.
As an offhanded addendeum, I think it's sort of funny. For me, the most interesting part of the evening wsa the discussion of the animation process and getting to see some shots of his animation studio. I've seen probably a half-dozen animator's studios now and they all look strangely similar. Cork-board, notes and pictures stuck everywhere, a Mac off to one side, and a generally cramped and cluttered room.
Letsee.
Nifty. So at the very least I _LOOK_ like an animator. I guess that's something. I mean, don't people always say that in Hollywood, image is everything?

- Animation disk? check
- Cork board? check
- Mac? check
- Notes and pictures? check
- Clutter? Oh yeah, you betcha. Check!
- Cramped? Hmm... Actually, I think my area is a bit more spacious. I'm gonna write this one off as having a day job though. :)
