War On Christmas

Dear Conservative Ass-munches,

There is no war on Christmas. Seriously, think about it for a minute. Liberals are all about love and peace and even if some of us aren't religious, the whole idea of peace on Earth and goodwill towards men, is a pretty great idea in my book. Sure that's a lot of greedy and insincere people, but there are other people who do tend to try. If anything is wrong with Christmas, it's really the people that only do it as a token for a few days out of the year instead of year-round, but ya know what? Even a token is better than nothing.

Now, of course, there have been some conservatives that went out and threw a hissy fit because someone put signs up in their windows that said 'PEACE' and in your hateful little eyes, that was apparently some kind of statement about the continued violence in Iraq. How dare anyone care that people are dying! Moreover, don't you recall seeing those signs before the Iraq invasion? Did us evil liberals some how invent a time machine and go back in time and plant the whole notion of peace and goodwill in Christmas just so this ONE year we could make a statement against Bush's diasterous war? Are you really that offended by some long-haired hippy freak saying we should be kind to our neighbors?

Oh, well, maybe you believe we evil liberals are just at war with the greedy capitalist portion of christmas? Not me, bub. I love the fat man! You go claw each other's eyes out over the last Elmo or Playstation 3 or whatever it is this year and run up as much credit card debt as you want. I don't care if you throw yourself into financial ruin to lie to your kids, in fact I think it's GREAT! See. Eventually, Tommy and Susie will learn the hard truth that there's no magical fat man who gives them everything their selfish little hearts desire. No Easter Bunny, no tooth fairy, and heck maybe it gets them thinking. Maybe there's also not a magical Skydaddy who'll reward them for being dickheads like you their whole life.

So, me? At war with Christmas? Not a chance! I think it's great! You on the other hand... I can see where it'd match your agenda.

I went to Olive Garden yesterday evening to pick up an order and the cashier said, "Happy holidays!" Oh why does she hate Christmas so, that she insists on using a greeting that *includes* Christmas, instead of referring *only* to it?

Oh, all this horrible horrible political correctness. Can't we just go back to the days of racism and sexism and disparaging non-Christian religions?

I think the so-called War On Christmas is a construct of the religious right as a rallying cry. If they make even the more moderate minded christians believe that their faith is under attack, then to them it might make their lunacy seem more justified. After having looked foolish for saying the war in Iraq was the Right Thing To Do(tm), having Intelligent Design and Creationism exposed for the gibberish it is, their fanaticism is beginning to shine through. Their hypocrisy shines even brighter when they spit on the tenent of Peace on Earth, as if wishing for peace is a traitorous concept.

Everything is a War now. War on Poverty. War on Terror. War on the Middle Class. War on Faith. Every day CNN has another War on ____________ to magnify the fear and paranoia. A frightened populace is easier to sway than one that thinks rationally. And they watch CNN more.

Maybe it would be too much to ask for a War on Stupidity. One can hope, though.

It's tempting to give you my entire opinion about commonalities to religions, why Christianity and Islam work as they do (and why Judaism would be in the same boat with majority status), and so on. But eh. You know, for there being a war on Christmas, man, there's sure a lot of Christmas including active reference to the J-dude himself, all over the darn place.
