Skool Stuff

I decided to forego the Monday night classes. After thinking about it, I decided I wanted a bit more free time and the things I was interested in on Monday weren't really that exciting.

Anyhow.. Today's classes were Sound for Animation and Design.

Sound for Animation looks like it's going to be reasonably interesting but mostly a rehash of things I already know with a bit of tedium added in. The interesting parts will be scoring for animation and conscious ideas about how to use sound. The tedious stuff will be their antiquated methods for looking up stock sounds to use in a project (basically this involves a paper catalogue and audio CDs. Blargh! why oh why don't they have a computer-searchable digital archive!?) Also, doing full bar-sheets for sound. I'm really really lazy about bar sheets. I'm not going to enjoy that.

On the other hand, I already have one idea for a really funny sound-track. Basically, I want to do all of the effects as spoken word like in a comic book. Rather than a boing noise, saying, 'bOOOIINNggggg!' etc. Limited use gags but for a 2 or 3 minute clip it should be pretty funny; especially if the sound-effect gags lead up to some kind of big sound-effect gag.

Now as for the design class. Holy crap! Mary Poppins is alive and teaching design. o_O This class promises to be a lot of hard work, but for me, that's a real plus. One of my biggest complaints about classes at DeAnza is that there frequently isn't enough homework. This is strictly 2-D black and white, nuts and bolts design; exactly what I want. The instructor (Joan Hill) has been teaching design at DeAnza for almost 40 years; meaning very likely people like Joe Murray and Johen Vasquez took her class. Anyhow, this seems like exactly the sort of design class I've wanted to take but failed to find previously. This plus the fact that the Remote Audio class runs until midnight on a worknight make me think I'm going to go with Design this quarter. Being called 'you ladies' and 'you girls' is going to take a bit of tongue-biting though. (The class is almost entirely female) consistently she used, 'ladies' or 'girls' in reference to the females of the class and 'men' for the males. This is something of a pet-peeve for me. I'm 32. I hate being called a 'girl' . But... The class looks good, so I'll deal with it. Anyhow, there was a somewhat-dykeylooking-but-probably-straight woman sitting at the same table as I, who seemed to be similarly biting her tongue. :) The real problem with this class is that the heater is dead and the room is f***ing freezing. I really have a hard time doing artwork when I'm shivering so hard I can't hold the pen still. Will have to see how it goes.

Anyhow, it's past my bedtime now and tomorrow is work and Storyboarding class, so I'll finish up with some of the junk from my sketchbook that I liked today.

Curiously enough, Peggy was drawing wasps and spirals today too. I wonder if our watching MonkeyBone and looking at all the gallery art on the DVD had anything to do with it? Anyhow... Bedtime for Bozo.

Probably. Though I tend to draw spirals anyway... Things percolate!

I can't look at any stylized picture of a bee now without thinking of that stupid sports logo for that one team.

Happily, I have no idea what you're talking about, nor am I about to look it up. :)

That has to be the happiest/frindliest wasp I've ever seen.
