Animation Reviews
Jun. 29th, 2007 02:56 amI've had a feast of animation this week. Ratatouille with a dash of Paprika.
I saw the later first, of course and thoroughly enjoyed it, though in ways it had a plot very VERY similar to Urusei Yurisai: Beautiful Dreamer but where the world in the Dreamer is a simple taste that takes one back to hazy childhood memories of lazy summers, Paprika is bright and vibrant, full of sauce and color with a complex flavor, ranging towards dark at times, then casting off its coating entirely and taking on much lighter flare. It isn't my favorite film ever but it's quite good. If you liked Spirited Away or Paranoia Agent odds are you'll probably enjoy this as well.
Stacey and I had planned to go back for a second helping of Paprika tonight but I was distracted working on an art piece and forgot about it until we were too late to go. So I suggested checking to see if there was a midnight snack of Ratatouille, which is fresh this weekend. There was and I was not disappointed. Once again the Bird was cooked almost to perfection and there was only the slightest hint of cheese. And excellent blend of expressive animation, good pacing, cutting, music, and effects. I really could rave on about it but better to try it yourself. Get it while it's hot.
And this concludes my ham-handed cutlery drawer of culinary quips.
Cheers.
